Most people bar-b-que on memorial day, but not us.......we worked cattle. My Dad takes care of a ranch down the road, and twice a year we gather all the cattle, work calves, vaccinate, brand, spot-on, fly tag, and sell any culls. The cattle there are really hard to gather.....they usually see us coming and they run for the hills(in this case lots of brush and rocks and more brush). To say the least, things usually get a little hairy. Gavin wanted to help gather, just like times before, and he made quite a hand. He sure is good at pushing cattle. We can put him in the back, and he keeps them pushed up. He likes to ride old Strawberry, and he likes to go fast. We kept asking him if he wanted to go back to the pens, but he just stayed right with us. We sure are proud of him and the little cowboy he is.
Even though it was really hot and we had to do some really hard riding, we had so much fun! We love being able to help! The funnest part of the day was when we were bringing in the last of the strays in the evening, and one little calf made a run for it. Quinn, my Dad, and Adam fell right in behind it with ropes in hand. He was an extremely fast little booger, and they were in open country....one of them would fall in behind at a dead run, throw their loop, he would run right through it before they could pull their slack, and then the next one was right there to try again. It was all happening so fast, I kept thinking man I wish I had my camera, it was definatley a kodak moment. It would have made for some great pictures. Before long they caught the calf and took him back to the pens. We can't wait for the winter roundup, because even though we don't know what to expect, one thing is for certain......we know it will be an adventure!
